Save the date for the 5th AEUP Conference, Festina Lente: The Pace of Change in Scholarly Publishing, taking place in Milano on 29–30 April 2027. This year’s theme, Festina Lente, captures the central tension facing university presses today: how to navigate a landscape of accelerating change without losing sight of what matters most.
From increasingly sophisticated AI tools to evolving legal frameworks, metadata standards, indexing practices, and archiving requirements, university presses are being asked to adapt on multiple fronts at once. Change is reshaping not only the technologies we use, but also our governance structures, our communication strategies, and the very scope of what we publish, expanding beyond the classic scholarly monograph toward formats that make knowledge more accessible, usable, and reusable by practitioners and communities alike.
The 2027 conference will explore how university presses can position themselves amid this shifting terrain. Because the real challenge isn’t keeping pace with every change – it’s knowing which changes demand action now, and which are worth simply watching as they unfold.
