The Association of European University Presses stands alongside AUPresses and its international partners in defence of freedom of expression and has formalised this commitment by signing the International Statement on the Freedom of Expression, and the Freedoms to Read and Publish.
As an Associate Member of the Association of University Presses and part of a broader international network that includes the International Authors Forum, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, the International Publishers Association, and PEN International, AEUP considers public support for these core freedoms to be fully aligned with its mission and values. By adding its signature, AEUP joins partner organisations worldwide in affirming a shared commitment to intellectual freedom, academic integrity, and the open exchange of ideas.
Why this matters now
While Europe continues to enjoy comparatively strong protections for freedom of expression and publishing, pressures on these freedoms are increasing globally. In some regions, restrictions are overt; in others, including parts of Europe, they are emerging in more subtle and indirect forms. University presses, as custodians of scholarly communication and academic debate, have a particular responsibility to stand clearly and confidently in defence of the freedom to read, write, research, and publish.
Signing this statement at this moment sends a clear signal: AEUP stands with its international partners in opposing censorship and in supporting the fundamental freedoms that underpin scholarship, education, and democracy.
The AEUP Board informed members of its intention to sign the statement and invited comments or objections. As no objections were raised, the statement was signed on behalf of AEUP in early April.
